Creating Gardens in Small Spaces
Gardening is a great way to connect with nature and grow your own nutritious foods. However, it can be tricky to accomplish with small or limited outdoor space. Here are some tips to maximize space and grow healthy plants.
Make A Plan - No matter how large or small your space is, plants will not thrive without healthy soil and adequate sunlight. Keep this in mind when deciding on what to plant and your space. Some vegetable and fruit plants require more sun than others while some can adapt to shadier sections.
Use Containers - Smaller foods like herbs or lettuces can be planted in pots and be placed on windowsills or set out on porches, patios, or decks. Containers are available in a wide variety of shapes making them easy to fit in different nooks or garden spaces.
Raised Beds - Compared to parallel rows, raised beds take up less space. This method also helps to keep out weeds, garden pests, and prevent soil from running off.
Grow upwards - Vertical or tower gardens work well in areas that lack large open outdoor spaces. A trellis or fence is great for cucumbers and tomatoes. Growing upwards if your friend when space is at premium.
